Harvest season in the Ozarks means time for seed cleaning and storage at the Ozark Seed Bank. It is a time of lots of activity, but also a time of reflection and looking back at a year of accomplishments.
2009 SUCCESSES
This year's collaboration with Ozarks Food Harvest and MU Extension provided 5000 seed packets and basic gardening booklets to community centers and soup kitchens in 29 counties in southern Missouri. Thanks to over 200 food distribution centers that service individuals and families in need, we were able to provide support to first time gardeners across southern Missouri.
BASIC GARDENING IN THE OZARKS
The 16 page booklet "Basic Gardening in the Ozarks" was produced and printed with help from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks and the Missouri University Farm Extension Agency. The booklet is a great guide to the basics of gardening in our region. Topics covered include compost and mulch, soil quality and irrigation. There is also a planting calendar, that describes the recommended planting dates for the most common vegetables. Copies of the booklet are available free of charge, and can also be downloaded at the Ozarkseedbank website.
HEROIC EFFORT IN WILLOW SPRINGS
A special appreciation is in order for the Willow Springs High School students who helped start seedlings in the school greenhouse this year.
The students grew 7,000 seedlings for community gardens and families in need. A total of 10,000 seedlings were distributed to community gardens and donation centers in twelve counties.
All these projects were made possible by the generous support of our volunteers, seed bank members, and those who made donations.
