A
relative of our familiar garden fare - tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants,
and tomatillos - this potent annual of the family Solanaceae
is not quite so gentle. Growing to 5ft, the long, funneled white
trumpet flowers open eerily in evening light from May-Sept, enticing
a host of moon-loving moths with its exotic sweet scent.
Grow specs: Space at 3ft.
Traditionally used as a folk cancer remedy, also for
asthma, rheumatism, Parkinson's disease, as well as an antispasmodic,
hypnotic, and narcotic. A powerful drug that should never be used
without supervision. Overdoses are easy and always fatal. Handling
seeds may cause eyelids to swell.
